Over 40 years ago, dedicated  community leaders, including Pleasantburg Rotarian Percy Terry of Springfield Tool and Dye, Dr. Virginia Uldrick,  Music and Drama Teacher for the School District of Greenville County, and Superintendent J. Floyd Hall established Spring Sing. Their vision and collaboration led to the creation of a unique music education initiative for young students in the community.

What distinguishes Spring Sing from other programs is its comprehensive approach. It goes beyond being a grand performance and involves several months of preparation leading up to the main event. The program not only showcases the students’ musical abilities but also provides valuable and sustainable resources for music teachers in all Greenville County Schools.

These resources include:

  • Sheet Music Library: The program contributes  to the development of a sheet music library for the school district, ensuring that music educators have access to a wide range of music materials for their students.
  • Music Education: Spring Sing provides additional music education opportunities for students, helping them build self-esteem, courage, and self-confidence through the development of performance skills.
  • Professional Development for Music Teachers: The program brings in a clinician who provides  professional development opportunities for all music teachers in Greenville County through an in-service program. This in-service program motivates teachers and focuses on various aspects, including how to engage students effectively in the classroom, improve conducting skills, and offer tips and techniques for workshops and sessions related to new aspects of music education. The clinician helps teachers integrate concert material with broader educational goals, incorporating historical, cultural, and theoretical elements.
  • Student Scholarship:  Open to high school seniors who participated in Spring SIng and will pursue a four-year degree. The recipient is selected through an audition process in front of the selection committee.

The culmination of these efforts is a performance held at the Concert Hall at the Peace Center for the Performing Arts. This event provides a platform for young musicians to showcase their talents and hard work for the community.

Spring Sing is a remarkable program. It nurtures the musical talents of elementary and middle school students.  It also plays a pivotal role in supporting music education and music teachers in Greenville County. Spring Sing serves as a valuable and unique initiative within the community, enriching the lives of both students, parents, and educators through the power of music.

TOGETHER we see a world where PEOPLE unite and take action to CREATE lasting
